NORMAN ONLINE / HELP CENTRE

Make your first profile.

A practical guide to the free browser drawing studio and what it can — and cannot — do. No downloads or installation required for approved online testers.

Development preview — not a manufacturing tool

The online editor produces open centreline sketches. It does not compute material-specific bend deductions, backgauge positions, tooling clearance or certified flat patterns. Validate any exported geometry independently before use.

Five steps to a sample sketch.

Every shape stays on your device unless you choose to export and share it.

  1. 01

    Open the free drawing studio

Click Start Drawing on the homepage. No username, password or account is required.

  2. 02

    Choose a starting shape

Use the colour-coded Profiles tab to select a quick shape or search the 58 editable section starters. All are reference-only sketches, not developed fabrication blanks.

  3. 03

    Set exact leg dimensions

Tap a leg or choose it in the Precision leg editor, then set its length (mm) and direction (°). The endpoint and later points move together so downstream legs retain their lengths and angles. You can also drag green nodes or type exact X/Y coordinates. The new Shape orientation controls mirror, rotate, reverse point order or move the first point to X=0, Y=0 without redrawing. Mirroring and rotation use the first point as their pivot. Use Undo if a change is unsuitable. The origin is not a backgauge position.

  4. 04

    Check Sketch Review

Fix zero-length edges, repeated endpoints and crossing segments before DXF export. Short edges cause warnings. Point fields show and retain the numeric precision entered or imported (including values finer than 0.1 mm). The DXF exporter rounds coordinates to 0.001 mm and blocks a file if that rounding would create invalid geometry; keep the JSON backup for original sketch values. These are basic checks only, not fabrication approval.

  5. 05

    Save, back up, then export

Save up to 200 profiles locally (browser storage permitting), search them by name or material, and delete individual entries when no longer needed. The library never silently drops older profiles when full. Unsaved edits also create a browser-only recovery draft; on a return visit, choose Restore unsaved sketch or discard it. If another tab changes the draft, autosave pauses and warns you to export JSON before reloading; saved-library edits are also paused when another tab changes that library. Export the current sketch as JSON before reloading, and work in one Studio tab at a time. This is not a substitute for a JSON backup. Use Backup all to download your library. DXF is intended for CAD inspection; SVG includes explicit millimetre dimensions and checks basic centreline geometry before download, but some viewers may rescale it; verify any imported dimensions. SVG remains a drawing reference, not a manufacturing drawing, and JSON can be reimported.

Understand your files.

DXF

Centreline CAD export

An open polyline in millimetres for review. It does not include developed blank widths, bend radii, material compensation or CNC bend instructions.

SVG

Visual outline

A simple 2D drawing view, useful for preview and communication. Not a dimensionally verified fabrication drawing.

JSON

Editable data and backups

A portable profile record, or a full library backup using Backup all. Restore on another browser using Restore backup. Restores merge unique profiles, confirm before writing, and refuse to overwrite older records when the library is full.

Frequently asked questions.

Are my drawings synced to the cloud?

No. The browser preview stores saved profiles locally on this device. Switching browsers, clearing site data or replacing a phone can remove them. Export a JSON backup first.

Does Norman produce DXFs for our punch turret?

The current online DXF is an open centreline reference, not the closed, developed sheet-metal cutting contours a turret CAM program needs. Use the Turret tab to review simple sketch issues, record your shop's optional feature and punch-width references, and download a CSV preparation checklist. The checklist never certifies tool clearance, punch hits, nibbling, clamp positions, hole patterns, nesting, or a finished flat pattern. The actual cutting blank and tooling sequence must be created and checked with validated CAD/CAM and approved on the real machine.

Can I use the online DXF in production?

Not without independent engineering review. The sketcher doesn't calculate bend allowances or verify flat patterns. The desktop application's production acceptance also remains outstanding.

Where are the Windows downloads?

No public production installer has been approved. The current desktop development candidates and test packages are not public downloads. Check release status for verification steps.

Do I need an account?

No. The free public beta is open to everyone. Click Start Drawing. Use a modern browser and back up saved designs as JSON.

Is the full Windows Norman app available online?

No. Norman Online is a separate browser experiment, not a port of the desktop geometry engine. Its 3D concept preview is a simple extrusion illustration, not an accurate sheet-metal solid or flat pattern.

PROFILE STUDIO · REFERENCE FEATURES

Start a shape, then make it your own.

Private Studio includes 58 searchable open-centreline starters across six categories, editable width/height/return inputs, precise new-leg construction with relative or absolute angle, and a selected-leg midpoint command. You can measure between arbitrary points, inspect segment lengths and geometric turning angles, compare against saved drawings or captured sketches, and export a CSV leg schedule or downloadable HTML reference sheet. The Studio also has a live extrusion-style 3D concept view and a Duplicate action for locally saved profiles. Both the 3D view and the new geometry inspector are reference tools. Turning angles are not press-brake bend angles. The 3D depth slider changes only the visual reference. These tools do not add solid geometry, material thickness, bend allowance, tooling clearance, validated fabrication flats or manufacturing instructions. Save your work to this browser, then export a JSON/library backup for safekeeping. A downloadable HTML reference sheet may be opened and printed from the browser, but it is not a workshop drawing. Check DXF dimensions independently after import.

READY TO TRY IT?

Start drawing with Norman Online.

Anyone can try the public beta. The software is still being tested. Your work remains saved locally; always keep a backup.

Guide reflects current prototype source. Cloudflare activation and real-device acceptance are separately required.

Norman Online: jobs, manual blank references & Amada VPSS

The private Studio now offers a local Job Hub and revision snapshots, Guided/Expert drawing tools, an optional single-bend theoretical estimate, and a separate manual rectangle/holes/rounded-slot DXF reference export with closed contours and cutting/reference layers. Select Develop to enter independently verified blank dimensions. The existing Profile DXF is still an open centreline.

Amada EMZ-3612 + VPSS are the target workshop environment, not a certification. Tool stations, clamps, sheet travel, VPSS DXF import mapping, actual flat development and manufacturing suitability are not simulated or verified. These reference files must never go directly to machine operation without qualified CAD/CAM and engineering sign-off.

Jobs and profiles stay only in the current browser and website origin. Back up as JSON. Preview and Production have different browser storage. Do not clear site data before backing up.
